Quilting

Hi fellow twitters/ quilters!
Do you know that quilting is popular in New Zealand as well as Australia? This is a craft which I only learned about 15 years ago when we came to live in NZ from South Africa. This craft is not as well known there. Now I'm totally in love with it. In fact, I would go so far as to say, I finally found my art medium! I always knew I had one, just wasn't sure what it was! I appreciate art in its many forms: sketching, painting, sculpting, dance, music, pottery literature, etc. etc. But never before had I considered that needle and thread, together with scraps of fabric, was an artform. Just as valid as the better known art forms. Sure embroidery is an obvious artform which no one could dispute. I never thought I could get into that! But lo and behold, with the introduction of patchwork quilting, embroidery can have a place too! I love seeing a spot of embroidery on a quilt! Or even better, more than just a spot!

So with the learning to measure, cut and sew, in the correct sequence those interesting shapes, I found myself falling back on skills learned in art class at high school.
I guess that was when I made the connection! Quilting is not just about sewing!

I'm always amused to hear some quilters (including myself) say, I'm not a dressmaker! That is another craft entirely. This usually occurs when someone approaches you with, "Do you sew? Can you please make me a ..... dress/skirt or whatever?" And I smile at them with a mixed feeling of, inadequatness and relief.

Funny how I never took to dressmaking! I used to think it a frightful bore! Are there others out there who are like me? Or am I strange?
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
